As growth skyrockets, Tik Tok reaches 1 billion users globally


More than a billion people around the world currently use TikTok, according to an announcement released by the app on Monday.

TikTok is a popular video streaming and social media platform founded in 2016. Users flock to Tik Tok’s mobile apps for music, humor, dancing and more, and their “For You” feeds are generated by algorithms that learn what they like.

In 2016, Tik Tok’s current parent company, Bytedance, released an app known in China as Douyin. In 2017, Bytedance announced the acquisition of another video app called The following year, ByteDance merged and TikTok into one to launch TikTok as an international brand.

TikTok’s growth has been explosive since then, according to Reuters, from 55 million global users in January 2018 to 689 million in July 2020.

In contrast, rival Facebook had 2.9 billion monthly active users worldwide in June 2021, according to its second quarter financial report.

TikTok has also created several competitors, including Instagram Reels. Earlier this year, Google released its own version of a short video called YouTube Shorts.

Last year, President Trump threatened to ban Tik Tok unless he transfers ownership to a U.S. company due to cybersecurity concerns. As a result, TikTok has partnered with Oracle and Walmart to agree to sell their U.S. operations to both companies.

However, the sale was postponed as the judge decided to postpone the ban, the Byden administration overturned Trump’s ban and reassessed the potential national security risks Tik Tok could pose. ..
