Before Felix “xQc” Lengyel, there was another major Felix in the content creation game: Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg. For a while, you couldn’t go on YouTube — or the internet, really — without seeing PewDiePie’s name, from his own videos to controversy to breaking records. But we don’t hear the catchphrase “it’s PewwwwwwDiePie” as clearly as before. Does PewDiePie still make videos? What happened to PewDiePie?

A quick look on YouTube will show you that PewDiePie is alive and well. He currently has over 111 subscribers on his channel, where he still uploads almost daily. PewDiePie’s content hasn’t changed too much, still ranging from personal vlogs to video game sessions. Through it all, PewDiePie retained the same humor, even the same way of speaking.

Watching the latest videos from PewDiePie instantly immerses you in the 2010s effortlessly. Although his editing is different and the quality has improved, you can’t help but remember all those early videos that made PewDiePie famous, including “you laugh, you lose” challenges and videos of him shouting to a not so scary video games.

Is PewDiePie still popular on YouTube?

Well yeah.

According to Statistics, PewDiePie’s subscriber count never really dwindled. It constantly increased. But the charts will show you that its growth has slowed dramatically. Since around April 2021, the blue line representing its number of subscribers has remained fairly stable between 110 and 111 million.

That’s still an impressive number, of course. But it’s safe to say that PewDiePie no longer has the same draw as before. Her recent videos are getting around 2.5-4.5 million views which is also impressive. But years ago, PewDiePie often reached insane numbers that YouTubers can only dream of, like “FUNNY EDIT #2from eight years ago with 72 million views. And even a video from 2019 getting over 51 million views for playing Minecraft.

Is PewDiePie the YouTuber with the most subscribers?

No more.

PewDiePie is known for many things. controversies. Video games. But one of his biggest stunts was competing with a channel called T-Series to become the most subscribed YouTube channel of all time.

T-Series is an Indian YouTube channel that also had tens of millions of subscribers. The channel even overtook PewDiePie at one point in 2019, but PewDiePie’s massive support from fans and other popular content creators helped him topple the popular music channel. PewDiePie even made a diss track featuring an infamous internet phrase etched in everyone’s mind forever.

But in the end, the T-series won. The channel currently has over 206 million subscribers, which is way more than PewDiePie. In fact, PewDiePie is currently sixth, behind generic channels like YouTube Movies, Music, and CocoMelon Nursery Rhymes.

Still, he’s the first actual content creator on the list, which is something.

Is PewDiePie rich?

But let’s be honest, PewDiePie probably doesn’t care that his videos are “only” getting around 5 million views right now or that T-Series won. Well one, because 5 million is still a lot. And two, because PewDiePie is already rich.

PewDiePie is estimated at $40-50 million by multiple sources. It’s thanks to its crazy audience, ad revenue, donations, merchandise, sponsorships, and more. Remember, PewDiePie has been doing this YouTube thing forever.

PewDiePie may not be as huge as he was years ago, but he still lives on as one of the most iconic content creators of our generation. Like influencers who have followed, PewDiePie hasn’t been afraid to talk about YouTube policies (and YouTube Rewinds) and politics.

Over time, PewDiePie has cooled down a bit. He recently moved to Japan with his wife, one of his dreams. This resulted in a lot of vlogging content, giving fans a better insight into her life and relationship. When he’s not talking about his life, PewDiePie has been doing reaction videos and gaming sessions, which he’s been doing since 2010.

Since its launch in 2005 by former PayPal employees Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, millions of people have watched, re-watched and shared YouTube videos from around the world. It now operates as one of Google’s subsidiaries, having bought YouTube in 2006.

The powerful content distribution platform encourages people to connect and inspire others through small and large content creators and advertisers. More so, YouTube spares no effort to improve its software with the latest features and updates for the masses.

For example, since Google strengthened its algorithm and added YouTube videos to search results, more and more people have migrated to YouTube. With the rise in popularity, various companies and influencers are making fortunes by attracting audiences to their YouTube channels.

According to YOUYouTube Chief Product Officer Neal Mohan said, “Each of these updates is based on extensive discussion and data, as well as feedback from the entire YouTube community.”

With updates for creators and viewers, YouTube certainly knows how to improve user experience and keep its audience engaged.

Here are all the YouTube updates and features you may have missed

Improve monitoring functionality

Under supervised accounts, parents can choose a specific content setting to restrict full access to videos and music, which can be searched and played by children under 13. They can also opt in to the features, default account settings, and advertisements they want their children to see.

To further support parents, in January 2022, YouTube announced that these supervised accounts can now use the video-sharing platform, on eligible smart TVs and other devices such as smartphones, laptops, computers and tablets as an app or through the web browser. Kids with supervised accounts can also access YouTube Music as an app as well as the website.

Additionally, in the US, parents with supervised accounts can even use YouTube, YouTube Kids, and YouTube Music on Google Assistant-enabled devices.

Presentation of the shorts

Short videos have taken the internet by storm. Be it Instagram Reels or Facebook Reels, the demand for micro video content keeps increasing day by day as people prefer to watch short videos. YouTube has also decided to integrate this into its platform in 2020, in the form of “Shorts”. According to his official blogYouTube Shorts has been hugely successful with 5 trillion all time views.

To support this growth, in February all Android devices were enabled to create short films by importing horizontal video clips of 60 seconds or less from their device gallery.

In March, this feature was improved on iPhone, according to which one can improve the lighting when recording a short film. To find the “Lighting” icon on your iPhone, you need to tap on the “More Reduce” option on the camera toolbar. Moreover, you can also edit your video clip in real time now. All you have to do is press the “Retouch” magic wand on the camera toolbar and enjoy skin smoothing effect on your phone. Both features remain until you manually disable them.

Moreover, now you can watch Shorts on your computer, laptop, tablet and mobile phone. If you’re using a tablet or your phone, you can watch Shorts by tapping the Shorts icon at the bottom of the YouTube app or browser screen.

Improve YouTube Studio editor

To further support video content creators, YouTube updated its Studio Editor feature in February with some optimizations. Users can now add video thumbnailsend screens, audio tracks and fact sheets on their videos easily.

You can also trim and blur the videos accordingly. The purpose of this refinement is to streamline the video editing process for the respective YouTube channel.

Empowerment of subtitle editors

According to Youtube“The Caption Editor is a new channel permission in YouTube Studio that lets creators delegate the creation of captions on their channel to others.”

In April, access for subtitle editors was improved with certain measures. Creators can allow their loved ones to add and edit subtitles on their videos and also change the video subtitles initially set to a default language.

New Search tab

Google Support
Image: Courtesy of Google Support

Creators can now use YouTube Analytics to gauge how their channels are performing based on expected metrics and create content that will appeal more to their audience.

Last month, YouTube introduced a new “Search” feature that lets you know what your viewers and audience have been searching for in the past 28 days. You can also get insights like similar channel searches, content gaps, and search volume for each term categorized into low, medium, and high, which can then be filtered by geography and language.

To get this information, log in and click “Analytics” in the left menu of your YouTube studio account. After that, select “Search” and type any topic or term in the search bar to get started. You can also view search items you’ve saved, view Google Trends, report or unsave a search item.

YouTube will introduce this feature to other languages in the coming months.

Increased rigor

As a creator, you can moderate potentially inappropriate comments on videos with a new optional setting in YouTube Studio.

In the optional “Increase strictness” setting, you can keep more comments for review, especially when creators find potentially inappropriate content on their channels and want to avoid it.

Other updates

In April, YouTube strengthened its harassment and cyberbullying policy regarding the sharing of personally identifiable information. Under this, you can no longer share anyone’s medical records and other personal information.

It also created a new guideline called “Inappropriate Content for Children and Families” to make ads suitable for children. It is divided into three categories: “Content that encourages negative behavior”, “Adult content intended for children” and “Shocking content intended for children”.

As part of the Brixton House Housemates Festival, an artist tells a story about how grief can stay with you on her show, I Miss Amy Winehouse.

The power of Amy Winehouse could be felt throughout the life of Suchandrika Chakrabarti.

Back to black was the soundtrack of his youth, running around Camden with his friends and the music was similar to the vinyl records his parents owned, as was Winehouse’s signature beehive on his mother’s hair.

But Winehouse’s influence wasn’t just present in Chakrabarti’s teenage years, she first discovered it while flipping through music channels, then later realized how close she felt to someone she didn’t know.

Chakrabarti praised the accessibility of Winehouse’s music, the nostalgia for Love is a losing game and the melancholy but joyful air of Tears dry on their own.

She said, “This music is just timeless, it just hasn’t aged. For me, what she could do was take pain and grief and make art out of it.

“It makes his music so moving, so accessible, we’ve all been there in at least one of his songs, we’ve all been one of those people.”

While this isn’t Chakrabarti’s first show, his comedy and stand-up career didn’t begin until the pandemic began.

She hopes to upset regular stand-up, in addition to taking us on a journey back to her youth on Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black soundtrack, she will bring quizzes and closeness to her audience.

Although Chakrabarti’s original intention was to turn her story into a novel, she realized that the medium of a live performance could actually be part of the story.

She explained: “I wanted to try getting up for years but I worked in journalism and my hours were all over the place. There was never really time to commit to something like getting up, I don’t didn’t really know where to start.

“For me, it’s definitely important to talk about Amy and reassess the way she was treated and the headlines around her.

“But also, there is not my 20 years without the music of Amy Winehouse and also without being a fan of her.

“It was really impressed with her true genius, I wondered how she did it and I wish I could have done something like that myself.

“Without giving away my show, if we’re talking about grief, if we’re talking about death, what I have to do on my show, I would say it’s more about the joy that you find years later.

“On the 10th anniversary of Amy’s death last year, there was a lot of joy and people had a lot of fun talking about her even though her end was way too soon and it was very sad. There has a bit of unfinished business around it and I think people really want to talk about it.

“The live format is another way to deal with grief and loss, there is nothing more vivid than a live performance.”

I Miss Amy Winehouse will be at the Roommate Festival May 3-4 at Brixton House.

SYLVIE DOUGLIS, BYLINE: NPR.

(SOUNDBITE FROM DROP ELECTRIC SONG, “WAKING UP TO THE FIRE”)

DARIAN WOODS, HOST:

As Beijing residents line up for mass COVID testing this week, they are looking nervously at cities like Shanghai which are in lockdown for their fifth week. With an insufficient number of elderly vaccinated, the Chinese government simply wants to completely eradicate COVID. And when you try to weed out the omicron variant, that means severe lockouts.

WAILIN WONG, HOST:

This type of lockdown includes a large portion of what we would call essential workers in the United States, and it has resulted in a completely disrupted distribution of food and medicine. Some people have even died because they did not have access to medical services such as dialysis. And more generally throughout the city, there is real hunger. Supermarkets are closed. Supplies are low. And even food delivery has all but stopped.

KELLY WANG: It was mind blowing.

WONG: Kelly Wang is a 29-year-old television producer from Shanghai.

WANG: I was really, really surprised that in the 21st century, in a city – like an international city like Shanghai which is normally compared to Paris or New York – I couldn’t find food.

WOODS: So in response to this lack of food, Kelly ended up as a volunteer logistician overnight. In apartment complexes across the city, there are everyday people like Kelly who have taken matters into their own hands and are creating new mini-economies for grocery shopping in closets.

This is THE PLANET MONEY INDICATOR. I am Darian Woods.

WONG: And I’m Wailin Wong. Today on the show – the containment economy with Chinese characteristics. How residents of Shanghai’s apartment complexes are using old-fashioned group buying and bartering to help feed 25 million people as usual distribution channels clog up.

(MUSIC SOUND EXTRACTION)

WOOD: Kelly.

Wang: Hello.

WOOD: How are you?

WANG: I’m fine. How are you?

WOODS: Kelly Wang lives in a 30-unit apartment complex in Shanghai. She lives with her cat, Tangka.

WANG: She’s not interested.

WOODS: And Kelly says in early April she was prepared for what she thought was a short, harsh lockdown.

WANG: The first week was kind of fun because, you know, you can kind of avoid your boss. You don’t have to see them and you just work from home.

WONG: Kelly had about a week’s worth of groceries — milk, eggs, a bunch of veggies, supplemented with KFC deliveries at the start. But about a week later, as the government extended the lockdown, Kelly began finding it nearly impossible to find a food delivery service.

WANG: There was no one on the street except the rescuers. There was absolutely no one there. But then there was simply nothing you could order.

WOODS: When Shanghai went into full lockdown in early April, authorities only granted about 10,000 permits to delivery drivers. And in a city of 25 million people, he’s a delivery driver serving, like, the number of people in a large high school every day. In other words, good luck with any food delivery.

WONG: So Kelly started looking through the social media app WeChat, seeing how her friends were getting groceries, and she came across a message from a manager of a hotpot restaurant where she used to to go.

WANG: I saw him posting these pictures of vegetables, like, all in a pack for a certain price. And then he said, you know, if you need it, you know, you can contact me.

WONG: They were big packs – like restaurant-sized bulk vegetable boxes – minimum order around US$500

WOODS: Now group buying is nothing new in China. People have banded together to buy in bulk for years. And it’s even been institutionalized in apps like Pinduoduo, which you can think of as a Chinese equivalent of Groupon meets Costco, where you can buy anything from music speakers to fresh produce. Now, all that said, Kelly had never bought anything in a group before.

WANG: Absolutely not. I never did any of this before the pandemic, ever.

WONG: But now Kelly was considering becoming a party leader, which means she could potentially order food on behalf of her entire apartment of around 100 people. So she sends a message to the apartment’s WeChat group chat.

WANG: And then I told them, I have a supplier here.

WOODS: I know a guy.

(LAUGH)

WANG: Pretty much.

WOODS: He has a box of mysterious vegetables.

WANG: Exactly. It seemed very dodgy at first – like, very, very dodgy.

WONG: Did she meet this guy, for example, in the garage of her apartment?

WOOD: Yeah.

WONG: It’s like the eagle is flying at midnight. Like, I’m going to read the newspaper in the corner.

WOODS: Yes, exactly. It has a trench coat full of celery and carrots inside.

WONG: (Laughs) And, you know, for Kelly, maybe she was right to feel a little worried because there were a lot of scams. But she calls the guy, and he sounds pretty legit.

WOODS: And so Kelly and a small group of volunteers dress head-to-toe in white protective suits. They go door to door within the confines of the apartment. They ask residents what kind of food they want, thinking they could cram all those needs into big orders, like mystery vegetable orders for the hot pot guy.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: (non-English language spoken).

WONG: One of the residents asks for dry tofu. Kelly says it’s a luxury now.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: (non-English language spoken).

WOODS: They tally their orders on the notepads, hoping they can hit the $500 minimum.

WANG: Actually, it didn’t work.

WOOD: Oh.

WANG: It didn’t work. We just didn’t have enough people.

WOOD: Alright. Your first attempt fails. You are hungry. Your stomach begins to rumble.

WANG: (Laughs) At first, we just asked people, what do you need? We don’t tell them that we have to meet the number of orders before they can deliver to us. And then we got smart. We said, OK, now we have to meet at least 30 before they can deliver it to us.

WONG: So Kelly writes a clearer message on WeChat. She says, I order eggs. We need at least this number of commands for this to work. If you are with us, enter your name here. They put the message on the loudspeaker and also go door to door. This time it works.

WANG: We must have had at least over a thousand eggs at the entrance to our enclosure.

WOODS: Kelly sits in the doorway as the residents come downstairs to collect their eggs. She has a QR code on their phone for them to pay her, and they are grateful. Kelly remembers what one woman in particular told her.

WANG: She said, you’re that kind of little angel on earth to kind of save her life.

WOODS: That’s very nice.

WANG: No, it felt good. It felt really good to do that, even if it wasn’t for monetary gain or anything, didn’t it?

WONG: Kelly repeats the process, this time with milk. And at this time, Kelly receives good news. The government will start providing rations. Kelly gets good food – shrimp dumplings, cucumber and even chicken which her cat Tangka loves.

WOODS: But the citywide deployment of government rations was a mess overall. Kelly says she has friends who, nearly a month into the lockdown, have still not received food from the government. Also, some people were given rotten products or even counterfeit brands, and there were some products that some people really wanted that weren’t included in government rations – things like fruit, milk, cigarettes and alcohol.

WANG: They put a lot of things like soy sauce and vinegar or spices, right? People didn’t really need that. They didn’t know what people wanted most.

WONG: So Kelly created a spreadsheet for her apartment. In the first column, list what you have and maybe what you want in return. It’s barter. I’ll give you this for that.

WANG: A lot of people ask for Coke because apparently it’s really hard to get Coke these days.

WOODS: People joke that Coke bottles are the new currency in Shanghai, which is kind of emblematic of the collapse of business as usual under lockdown. But these measures – the group buying and barter system – have helped bring back a sense of normalcy, at least in people’s kitchen cupboards. These local business systems have helped meet people’s needs and wants, and they have shown how communities can care for each other when government fails.

WONG: Kelly is still in her apartment with her cat, now with her second job as a supply chain expert.

WOODS: What food are you most looking forward to after it’s all over?

WANG: I’m really thinking of a pumpkin. I really want a pumpkin.

WOODS: It’s an interesting choice.

WANG: And probably fried chicken too.

WOODS: If I’m honest (laughs).

WANG: Yes, if I’m honest.

(MUSIC SOUND EXTRACTION)

WOODS: The show is produced by Nicky Ouellet with engineering by James Willetts. Corey Bridges checked the show. Viet Le is our lead producer and Kate Concannon is editing the show. Many thanks to Alwin Saw (ph) and Emily Feng for their help on this episode. THE INDICATOR is an NPR production.

(MUSIC SOUND EXTRACTION)

WANG: I could put that on my resume that I used to be a group leader in Shanghai during the pandemic, so you should hire me (laughs).

SiriusXM and Audio Up Inc., which in October announced creative programming and a strategic agreement that will see the development of new original scripted series and audio entertainment concepts, announced the launch of two original scripted podcasts, “Make It Up As We Go: Season 2,” starring Garrett Hedlund, Scarlett Burke, Elle King, Nile Rodgers, and Shooter Jennings, and “Sonic Leap,” starring Anthony Anderson, Trippie Redd, and Hero The Band. Both will premiere May 3, with previews scheduled for May 2 on the Volume channel, and can be heard across the SiriusXM ecosystem – including the SXM app, Pandora and Stitcher – as well as on d other major American podcast platforms.

The deal allows SiriusXM to have a first-look co-production option for original podcast concepts by Audio Up, the podcast production studio founded in 2020 by audio innovator Jared Gutstadt, as well as access to the catalog back of the studio.

The second season of “Make It Up As We Go,” billed as “the first-ever scripted country podcast musical,” continues to follow country star hopeful Charlotte Sayles (played by series co-creator Scarlett Burke, who also contributes original music) as she navigates her way through Nashville’s male-dominated hit factory. Songwriter Liz Rose, Kat & Alex, Breland, Abby Anderson and Chord Overstreet make appearances on the show, in addition to Hedlund, King, Rodgers and Jennings. Jennings is also co-producing the show’s soundtrack with Gutstadt. Promotion for the series will be heard on SiriusXM’s Outlaw Country and The Highway channels.

“Sonic Leap” tells the fictional story of rock band Hero the Band. Composed of four brothers, they were sent back in 1985 to “change their future and the future of music”. Alongside original music from Gutstadt, Jeff Peters and Hero the Band, actor Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish,” “Law & Order”) makes his podcast debut. Rapper Trippie Redd co-stars and also contributes music. Also on deck is a full album from Atlanta’s Hero the Band, to be released on Audio Up Records. Hero the Band appearances are scheduled on SiriusXM’s 1st Wave and Alt Nation channels and Trippie Redd will guest DJ on Hip-Hop Nation.

“These projects are a testament to our abilities as storytellers, songwriters and music producers,” said Gutstadt, Founder and CEO of Audio Up. “With SiriusXM, Audio Up has an alliance with a shared creative vision and an unprecedented opportunity for scale. The unique value of this collaboration will be vast: on SiriusXM, Pandora, Stitcher and beyond on other major audio entertainment companies, and also down the road as potential film, music and television franchises that will be unlocked through the power of audio first.”

Scott Greenstein, President and Chief Creative Officer of SiriusXM added, “Whether it’s SiriusXM radio hosts appearing in podcast episodes or stars of the show playing guest DJ on SiriusXM channels and presenting to millions of new listeners, we’ve created a one-stop launch pad for these great podcasts and the original music they contain.

Of “Make it Up As We Go”, Hedlund noted: “Happy to be with Audio Up again. I had my first number one podcast with ‘Strawberry Spring’, our Stephen King project. I was thrilled to returning to country music in season two of “Make It Up As We Go”; revisiting my love for the songs and tales that are dear to me. Scarlett and Jared have this incredible dynamic, and I love being in their world. Jared is a visionary when it comes to how music plays in the world of podcasts, and I think it’s one of the most unique spaces in media right now.

Anthony Anderson said of Sonic Leap: “I met Hero the Band on a Zoom call earlier this year when I was working on the project. They were late and I gave them shit! But for real, these guys really bring something new to pop music. It’s like Prince, Terence Trent D’Arby and Lenny Kravitz have four incredibly gifted and talented children. It’s the magic combination of rock, soul and psychedelic pop. The band tells their story with this thrilling time travel adventure. I’ve never done anything like this before, and I know I’ll be happy to say I know them from the jump.

Announcing the podcast slate, Andrew Moss, SiriusXM’s senior vice president, business affairs and programming operations, also joins Audio Up’s board of directors.

Over the years, the church has given birth to many music stars; whether or not they stay in the gospel genre or end up looking for other avenues.

The story is the same for the rave of the moment, Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema.

While he began his musical career in church and as a bandleader, the nation rap, the demands of life and family pushed him to explore other avenues as a young teenager in Benin City, Edo State.

“A lot of people felt like it was when I was signed that I started to deviate or whatever, no. In fact, life was hard in Benin and I’m not that type asking people in church to pay me because I was doing God’s work,” he told Ebuka on Rub spirits on Television channels.

“Right there in Benin, I started going to competitions, bars, fairs, political rallies, just trying to get on stage or hold a mic to at least get some money to go home and just feed my family. We were going through hard times, I lost my father, I lost my brother, so I needed to help my family. That’s when I started to space myself out little by little until I went into exile.

His career reached a turning point when he decided to release his freestyle version of a D’Prince and Davido song in 2019.

According to Rema, it was a boring Thursday afternoon and although he had done several remixes before that day, luck would eventually shine on him after he tagged D’Prince on his latest freestyle.

“At the time, I was just scrolling and I saw that D’Prince had released a song with Davido and I jumped into it. I called my producer at the time, to redo the beat and I did a freestyle in my friend’s car and that was it. I tagged him and he commented, reposted and he DMed and that was it,” he said.

After Rema signed to D’Prince’s label, Jonzing World; a subsidiary of Mavin Records, he later released his first EP Rema in 2019, which peaked at number 1 on Apple Music Nigeria.

Since then, the 21-year-old has released other EPs and hit songs such as Dumebi, Bad Commando and ginger me with his unique sound which he categorizes under Afro-rave and Trap – hip-hop subgenres.

It will go on to win the Next Rated award at the 2019 Headies.

Although Rema has had his fair share of criticism, he thinks many have now warmed to his sound.

His mother, who at the beginning of his career did not understand his transition from gospel to circular music, is now also one of his biggest supporters.

“I didn’t really do a lot of explaining, I just told him to trust me,” Rema said, explaining that a lot of the things he sings about are things those who consider themselves “holy.” are still behind closed doors.

When asked if his mother accepts this “new” Rema, he replied: “Yes. Even when she saw my tattoos, she was like, it’s your decision, it’s your life as long as you don’t overdo it or get lost.

Love life

For the first time in his three-year career, the soft-spoken artist has dropped a complete body of work: Rave And Roses.

The 16-track album details love, addiction and fate.

“I swear this album has different vibes, different stories,” Rema told Apple Music. For him, “it’s this bridge that brings Rema fans together”.

If he has not yet had many collaborations with Nigerian artists, the young star says he has his eyes on other stars, Joeboy, Omah Lay and Benson (formerly Buju) among others.

As with all other celebrities, Rema’s love life is one that many remain curious about. But he says he is not dating or looking for love at the moment and when he finds a worthy partner he intends to keep her away from the watchful eyes of social media.

Responding to comments on a photo of his label mate Ayra Starr he recently posted, he said there were no strings attached and he was only celebrating her for her beauty.
